Every day I would wake up from my room at El Diablo y La Sandía, a hotel in el Centro de Oaxaca. I would find quiet mornings painting in the courtyard and taking in all the rich colors that make this city. This is a memory of that courtyard where I would find my peace.

This is part one of two of the “Oaxaca Series” prints I plan to release. Summer 2019 I fulfilled a personal dream of spending a meaningful immersive experience in Oaxaca. The focus was on learning about the culture and traditions of Las Zapotecas, an indegenous group to Oaxaca. Their passionate form of story telling, artisanal craftsmanship, and genuine respect for every living thing felt refreshing as an American visitor. Being welcomed to dine at the table by families from rural to urban reminded me of the inter connectivity we forget whilst living in the states. From sourcing only natural materials sustainably from the land in the creation of the tejidas to the hand crafted ceramicos with its metaphor tending to the soul as you sift the impurities of the collected earth, to the blessings and connection to spirit when turning the distillation of maguey over to God when making mezcal. The trip for me was not only a dive into tradition but also a dive into soul.
